Teaching & Mentorship

Servant leadership is one of my core values. I believe in uplifting others through my work, therefore the heart of my commitment to equity is informed by and enacted through my teaching.

Before coming to Stanford, I taught professionally for four years in Dallas and Singapore, with additional volunteer teaching in rural Indonesia. Across these prior teaching experiences, as well as the various Stanford courses where I have been either a Teaching Assistant or Primary Instructor, I have built and refined a student-centered teaching and mentorship philosophy focused on principles of cultural responsiveness, critical engagement, and unveiling education’s hidden curriculum. My goal is to ensure all students can be fully prepared to succeed both within and beyond my care, especially those most historically marginalized by universities.

My full list of teaching experiences is included in my CV. Below, I include courses I have taught at the university level, as well as excerpts from student and research assistant testimonials.

“In my opinion, one of the most commendable attributes a research supervisor can have is the ability to not only help develop the skills of their supervisees but also motivate them to cultivate their research interests and identity. Hannah did just that for me. She ensured that there was a balance between my involvement in her projects and my exploration of questions in my area of interest. She consistently tailored tasks to align with my abilities and passions. She also encouraged me to explore and cultivate new interests, thereby expanding my research horizons. Her help and guidance were extremely insightful along both of those fronts.”

Bismah Tahir, Graduate Student Research Assistant, 2022-23

“I work at a high school. Unbeknownst to Hannah, I mimicked many of her mannerisms and habits. I allowed my students to have more room to complete their tasks, I would check in frequently to see what methods work and if some needed to be replaced, and above all I treated my students as if their wellbeing came first, and the workload came after. Hannah has taught me that through compassion and a genuine zeal for the common work between a mentor and a mentee, the feeling of an artificial relationship soon dissolves. Just like how Hannah had supported me tirelessly, my students have come to feel equally reassured, and the results are evident. What started as just a simple internship gig has made me grow exponentially, gaining tools applicable in unrelated facets of my life.”

Gabriel Dominguez, Undergraduate Student Research Assistant, 2022-23
